South Boston is currently one of the hottest neighborhoods in Boston. South Boston has seen a huge influx of young professionals and families. This likely has to do with the area’s wealth of long-standing family businesses, nationally recognized restaurants, sandy shores, and unbeatable nightlife.
The neighborhood is known for its large Irish population dating back to the mid-1800s. While the area’s population has changed since then, South Boston has retained much of its Irish heritage and unique character. There are numerous ways you can spend your day in South Boston—from touring spots like L Street Tavern where Good Will Hunting was filmed or reliving the area’s Revolutionary War history at Dorchester Heights. Here are some of our favorite spots in South Boston:
South Boston Beaches
The choices for where to spend a sunny summer day in South Boston are numerous: L Street Beach, M Street Beach, Pleasure Beach, Carson Beach. A sandy stretch along William J Day Boulevard hosts some of the best beaches in Boston—and for good reason. The water in Old Harbor is great for a quick swim and the silky sand is perfect for sunbathing. At these beaches, you’ll also find locals enjoying a game of beach volleyball or strolling down the Harborwalk.
Castle Island
This peninsula at the tip of South Boston is a great place to spend the day. Castle Island is home to Fort Independence, which is one of the oldest continuously fortified British structures in the United States. During the American Revolution, the British abandoned the granite fort known as Castle William and it was later renamed Fort Independence. Once you’re done walking the grounds of the fort, head to Sullivan’s for classic New England seafood. You can enjoy your lunch at one of the picnic areas or right one of the stretches of beach on Castle Island. This area is also a perfect place to take your dog out for a long stroll.
West Broadway
For some of the best dining and drinks you can find in the city, head down West Broadway. This strip of restaurants and bars has a lot of diversity in cuisine and some great outdoor dining options. All year long, people from around Greater Boston flock to this street for brunch, dinner, or a night out. These lively blocks are a hot spot for young Bostonians and families alike.
Joe Moakley Park
Joe Moakley Park, named after a revered local politician, is one of the largest parks in the city. From soccer fields to picnic grounds to a splash park, this popular neighborhood hangout has everything you need to enjoy some much needed time outside. You’ll find local residents training on the outdoor track around the field throughout the year. If you decide to play tennis at one of the courts, once you tire out you can enjoy a refreshing swim at Carson Beach across the street.
