Going Green: Why You Should Embrace the Houseplants Trend

Have you noticed that all your friends can’t stop talking about their plants lately? Or are you the green thumb of your group? Well, you’re not alone. While primarily driven by millennials, houseplant ownership has risen significantly in the past few years.

Whether being a “plant parent” was a new hobby you picked up in quarantine or to simply breathe some life and style into your home, there are a number of reasons why you should consider taking on plant ownership.

Why should you get houseplants?

The obvious benefit to owning houseplants is that they beautify your home. Whether you want to go all out and turn your home into a lush boho chic escape or you want to keep it simple, plants can fit into any style. It can be a great way to bring in small accents of color, with flowering plants or a fun planter.

Bringing plants into your home can also improve your quality of living. Studies show that a plant in your home office can lower stress and anxiety while working. Even outside of work hours, taking care of plants can be a calming experience. Plus, there’s nothing like watching a plant thrive and grow under your care. If you have asthma, a dust allergy, or just rather breathe in cleaner air, various plant species can purify the air in your home by removing harmful toxins.

What’s a good starter plant?

Whether you live in a big sunny home or a small city apartment with just a few windows, there’s a plant for you. Every plant has different water and sun needs, and some are easier to take care of than others. If you’re looking for some easy plants to start your plant parent journey, here are some of our top suggestions:

Aloe Vera:

  • If you’ve ever tried to soothe a sunburn, you’re probably familiar with aloe. This attractive desert plant is a great addition to any home. You’ll need to sit them by a window for bright light, but it won’t need much water as it’s a succulent. You can leave aloe plants in the same pot for years and you can even snip off a leaf to harvest the gel for its soothing properties.

Chinese Evergreen:

  • These leafy plants come in a variety of colors, from dark greens to speckled white, and even pink! These plants are extremely forgiving and can adapt to most room conditions. If you’re lacking on windows, this is the plant for you as it prefers low and indirect sunlight.

Snake Plants:

  • Despite their aggressive name, these plants are one of the most easy going plants out there. They are tolerant of all levels of light, from bright to low. Snake plants only need water sparingly, so if you forget all about it for a few weeks, it will likely still be thriving.

The options for houseplants are endless. Head to your local plant shop or nursery to secure some great finds for your home. If you’re looking for a sunnier place to call home for you and your plants, give us a call at 617.314.9400.
